So, shortly after posting the previous blog entry, the wind picked up – as expected, and the seas became quite uncomfortable. They were from the same direction as the wind but were so close together the wave period was about three seconds. It’s kind of hard to believe but for about 10 hours we had those 3’-4’ waves on the beam and of course every so often a couple of them stack up and really rolled us hard. Not dangerous but a pretty lousy ride.

Spent two nights in Playa Algodones, the northern most and largest anchorage of San Carlos. If you compare the below photographs, you’ll see that the mountains over my right shoulder are the same as those next to my grandmother when they sailed here in 1979! How cool is that?

After the moon-rise picture is one of Tess with an abandoned Club Med behind her. The giant sand dune in the middle of the 2 mile long beach is known as Catch 22. The 1970 movie by that name was filmed here and in my grandmother’s ship’s log she talks about exploring the remains of the sets that were immediately behind the sand dunes. A local delicacy here is chocolate clams, so named for the color of the shells. Served raw after being cleaned and chopped – delicious!

We then spent two nights in a very small anchorage called Caleta Lalo and have now moved into the main anchorage of San Carlos, just outside the marina. Some magnificent homes on the mountains around here.

In the picture of the showers, note that the floor no longer exists and the showers are unreachable. Last one is of the cat’s new playground – a very risky place for her to play…
